United Way of Central West Virginia Information and Referral and Volunteer Resource Center By providing resources and services to ensure that nonprofit organizations are strong, efficient, and accountable, the United Way of Central West Virginia Nonprofit Services Division helps organizations meet the needs of the community. This is accomplished through the following: Nonprofit Services offers organizational and board assessments, board training, and strategic planning services for nonprofit organizations. Additionally, Nonprofit Services will offer certification to nonprofit organizations that meet the United Way of Central WV certification standards and will provide technical assistance to organizations working to meet the standards. Nonprofit Services also coordinates Gifts in Kind, which provides an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to receive donated goods for a very minimal administrative fee; for eligible nonprofit organizations; The Information and Referral Bureau’s primary responsibility is to help individuals and families find the services they need. Staff maintains a database of more than 800 health and human programs and services for Boone, Clay, Kanawha, and Putnam counties. The Information and Referral Bureau coordinates the Christmas Bureau, a clearinghouse for numerous Christmas services in the Kanawha Valley, including Secret Santa, the Salvation Army, and more; The Volunteer Resource Center promotes volunteerism and community service by linking individuals and organizations with volunteer opportunities, plans special community service events, and works to strengthen support for volunteers. Learn and Play Center The Learn and Play Center is a model child development center, serving children from six weeks through five years of age in a child-care setting. Utilizing the Parents as Teachers model and learning activities, the Learn and Play Center provides a child and family centered curriculum. The Learn and Play Center provides a safe, nurturing, and enriching day-care setting for children whose families are working or are engagesd in educational activities. While low-income families living on Charleston's west side are the target population for the center, the Learn and play Center serves children from all areas of the county and from all economic levels. The Parents as Teachers philosophy maintains that children learn best through play and that parental involvement is critical to the academic success of children. In line with this philosophy, the Learn and Play Center provides opportunities for dramatic play, numerous literacy activities, outdoor play, art, music, and many other developmentally appropriate activities. Additionally, the Center provides family fun nights on a regualr basis,, where all family members are invited to join their child at the center for engaging and enriching family activities. Currently 90 children are enrolled with a cacity of 100 children possible. The Parents as Teachers Learn and Play Center is much more than what we typically think of a "daycare". The Center is a true home away form home for children and provides a spacious, bright, and comfortable environment, conducive to child-based learning. With the move to the SFEC, I&R services to more than 3,000 individuals and families was greatly enhanced. While I&R services have historically been provided primarily over the telephone, locating at the SFEC has resulted in more walk-in clients. Additionally, staff of the Volunteer Resource Center has worked closely with other tenant agencies in the SFEC to identify resources in the community, assess customer needs, and match these needs with the resources.
